Skincare in autumn: why now is the best time for regeneration

What sun, salt and chlorine leave behind — and what your skin really needs after summer

Summer is the season in which the skin gets the least attention and has to endure the most. Sun, heat, salt water, chlorine, air conditioning, plus lighter care and less routine — it all adds up. What remains of it rarely shows in August. It shows now: in September, when the tan fades and underneath a complexion emerges that looks drier, more uneven and more tired than in spring.

That is not bad news. From a professional point of view, early autumn is the most sensible time of the whole year to work on skin quality. In this post I explain what summer does to the skin, which concerns typically show up now — and why certain treatments have their place in this season of all seasons.

What summer leaves behind

Four things happen in parallel in summer, and each on its own would be harmless. Together they produce the typical late-summer skin picture.

1. The skin barrier is put under more strain than you think

The outermost layer of skin works like a wall made of cells and lipids. Salt water, chlorine, frequent showering and UV exposure attack precisely this lipid content. The wall develops gaps. You don't notice it as “damage”, but as a feeling: the skin feels tight after washing, stings briefly when you apply your usual skincare, and suddenly reacts to products that were tolerated well for years.

A weakened barrier also loses more moisture to the outside. That's why skin often looks dry in September even though it feels shiny at the same time — that's not a contradiction, but an attempt to compensate for the loss with more sebum.

2. Moisture loss you only notice later

Heat and air conditioning draw water out of the skin. As long as the tan is still there, it masks this: a tanned face looks more even, small lines are less noticeable. Once the tan has faded over the course of September, this effect disappears — and the dryness lines around the eyes and mouth that nobody noticed before become visible.

3. Pigment: the bill arrives late

Pigment spots are the classic autumn question. They develop in summer but only really show once the overall tan is gone and only the darker patches remain. Anyone looking in the mirror in September and thinking “that wasn't like this last year” is usually right.

Important to know: not all pigment changes are the same. Freckles, age spots, marks left after inflammation and hormone-related discolouration behave differently and need different approaches. That is why, with this topic, the skin analysis has to come first — not the treatment.

4. Regeneration backlog

The skin is constantly renewing itself. When it is busy with repair for weeks, less capacity remains for everything else. The result is a complexion that looks dull without being able to name a single cause. This is exactly where the autumn work begins.

Why autumn is the right season

There are three reasons, and all three are practical.

UV exposure is falling. This is the most important point — but it does not apply across the board. After microneedling the skin is temporarily more sensitive to light, after a Plasma-Pen even for weeks. In July that is a real problem, in October hardly one any more. Other treatments are not affected: BioRePeel, for instance, can expressly be used all year round and does not make the skin light-sensitive. Anyone who claims across the board that “everything works better” in autumn is selling a season instead of a reason.

It's time for a series. Almost everything that really changes skin quality doesn't work in a single session, but over several spaced a few weeks apart. From early September to Christmas there are around three months — enough for a complete course, without any rush.

The skin has peace again. No chlorine, no salt water, no midday sun. What you give it now doesn't have to fight against something else at the same time.

Which treatments make sense now

Microneedling and Premium Needling with the GoldPen

With Microneedling the finest needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin. Two things happen: the skin responds to the stimulus with its own rebuilding processes, and the actives I apply straight afterwards reach where a cream never gets to.

The second point is the decisive one — and it is often overlooked. The device only opens the way. What goes through determines the result. That is why the treatments with the Premium Needling with the DERMICA GoldPen are named after their active-ingredient ampoule and not after the device: if you book “Hydration Needling”, you get the HA Repair Solution; if you have a pigment concern, you get a different one.

For autumn this matters because it shifts the question. It's no longer “Microneedling: yes or no”, but “which active suits what the summer has left behind”.

ExoPDRN — the new generation of actives

Since this summer I have been working with ExoPDRN, the latest ampoule from DERMICA. It belongs to what the manufacturer calls “Skin Longevity”: it is not about a quick effect but about supporting the skin’s natural functions for as long as possible.

To avoid any confusion — this is the point where a lot gets mixed up online:

  • GoldPen is the treatment. The device, the technique, the micro-channels.
  • ExoPDRN is the active ingredient, which is used in the process. An ampoule, not a device and not a procedure of its own.

What it contains:

  • PDRN — DNA fragments, here from the fermentation of Lactobacillus plantarum. That makes the ampoule vegan and traceable; classic PDRN comes from fish. The fragments are smaller than there, under 100 base pairs compared with 200–800.
  • Plant-based exosomes from comfrey stem cells — signal carriers that transport proteins, lipids and small RNA molecules.
  • Glycine and proline — two amino acids that are among the building blocks of the collagen structure.
  • Hyaluronic acid in several molecular weights — nourishes surface and depth at the same time.

The ampoule is vegan and fragrance-free. I use it above all when the skin looks tired and exhausted, when the first signs of skin ageing are there without one single concern being in the foreground — and as support after intensive treatments, when the skin has a lot to cope with. The aim is for the skin to look smoother, more vital and more resilient. Lasting substance instead of a short-lived effect.

Because ExoPDRN is new to the studio, until the end of October there is a Introductory price. Trying it out before deciding on a course — that is all it means.

BioRePeel CL3 — the reset after summer

BioRePeel is a peel that does without the classic peeling phase. Honestly, it is not seasonal — it is suitable for all skin types, can be used all year round, with no downtime and no subsequent light sensitivity. That is exactly why it fits into early autumn: it works on precisely the issues summer produces — uneven complexion, rough surface, clogged pores, dull look — and you do not need to clear anything in your diary for it.

If you want to combine both, you will find with the Duo of Microneedling and BioRePeel the more intensive option: clear the surface first, then channel in the actives.

Pigment and complexion — now or not until next year

Treatments aimed at a more even complexion are difficult in high summer: the skin is tanned, the sun is high, and both work against the result. From autumn onwards this reverses. That is why I deliberately schedule pigment concerns for this time of year.

One limitation that comes with it: not every skin type is suitable for brightening actives. On very dark skin types (Fitzpatrick V and VI) I don't use them. We clarify that beforehand too, not on the treatment chair.

Plasma-Pen — the treatment that really needs autumn

If there is one treatment for which the season is not a matter of taste, it is this one. With the Plasma-Pen small dot-like scabs form — that is intended and part of the healing. They fall off by themselves after around five to eight days, and the new, rosy skin underneath is then noticeably sensitive to the sun for weeks.

That is why I have one clear rule: no direct sun and no sunbeds for at least eight weeks after the treatment, then SPF 50 consistently on the treated area for three to four months — even in winter. Anyone who has the treatment in June would have to spend the whole summer in the shade. Anyone who starts in October gets those eight weeks over with in November and December without missing out on anything.

That is why I deliberately schedule Plasma-Pen appointments in the darker half of the year. Not as a promotion, but because otherwise the treatment cannot heal cleanly.

Important, and without sugar-coating: the Plasma-Pen is no substitute for surgery. Results, healing and skin reactions are individual and cannot be guaranteed. Swelling and redness last three to ten days, and the scabs must not be picked off. Sensitive areas such as the eyes, mouth and neck can only be booked after a consultation and suitability check — that is not a formality but the actual first appointment.

Adjusting your care at home — but properly

The studio does part of the work. The larger part is done by what happens at home between appointments. For the transition into autumn, three changes are worth making:

Firstly: restore moisture before thinking about anti-ageing. Skin with a disrupted barrier can do little with highly concentrated actives — it tends to react with irritation. The order is: first replenish and calm, then rebuild. Serums with hyaluronic acid are the obvious starting point here.

Secondly: go richer, but step by step. As soon as the heating is on, indoor humidity drops significantly. The light summer texture is then usually no longer enough. The switch can happen gradually — first in the evening, later in the morning too.

Thirdly: don't put the sun protection away. The most common mistake in autumn. UVA radiation is present all year round and penetrates clouds and window glass. Anyone currently investing in pigment or skin quality should keep up the protection right now — otherwise one half of the effort works against the other.

Which products actually suit you depends on the condition of your skin, not on the season alone. You will find a selection in the Shop; it usually makes more sense to go through the routine together once.

When a consultation is the better first step

There are situations in which I advise against booking a treatment directly and instead start with a Skin analysis start:

  • if your skin is currently irritated, feels tight or burns — then the barrier is stabilised first
  • for pigment concerns, because the type of discolouration determines the approach
  • if several concerns are present at once and it is unclear where to start
  • with pre-existing conditions, medication or during pregnancy
  • if you are unsure whether a series is worthwhile or a single session is enough

An honest assessment beforehand saves more money than any discount.

In brief

  • What summer leaves behind only shows in September — before that, the tan hides it.
  • The four typical issues: weakened barrier, moisture loss, pigment, regeneration backlog.
  • Autumn is the right time because UV exposure decreases and there is room for a complete series before Christmas.
  • With needling, it is the active ingredient that determines the result, not the device.
  • Pigment concerns and the Plasma-Pen belong professionally in this season — with the Plasma-Pen it's eight weeks without sun, which simply doesn't work in summer.
  • At home the rule is: moisture and barrier first, then actives — and keep the sun protection.

This article is no substitute for a consultation or a medical assessment. All treatments described are cosmetic applications. In the case of skin conditions, unusual changes or discomfort, a dermatological assessment is the right first step.
