Skin keratinization: causes and solutions
The skin, our largest organ, is constantly undergoing a process of renewal. Old skin cells are shed and replaced by new ones. Keratinisation refers to a thickening of the uppermost skin layer, in which the skin cells are no longer shed properly. This can lead to dry, rough and flaky areas of skin.
Ursachen
- Umweltfaktoren: Extreme cold or heat as well as dry air can dry out the skin and contribute to keratinisation.
- Genetik: Some people are genetically predisposed to more strongly keratinised skin.
- Hauterkrankungen: Conditions such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis can also cause keratinisation of the skin.
Ways to remove the keratinisation
- Peelings: Regular peels (mechanical or chemical) help to remove dead skin cells.
- Feuchtigkeitscremes: Daily use — especially with ingredients such as urea — hydrates the skin and reduces keratinization.
- Baths: Oil baths or baths with special additives soften keratinisation and make removal easier.
- Medical treatments: In case of severe keratinisation, a visit to the dermatologist is advisable.
- Special foot care: For keratinisation on the feet, medical foot care and targeted products help.
Vorbeugung
Regular skincare, a balanced diet, sufficient fluid intake and protection from extreme weather conditions help to prevent keratinisation.
